How To Get Photos That Feel “Cinematic” & What That Even Means
I like to say my photos are "movie-like." But what does that really mean?
Well, think about your favorite movies. They all have certain things in common. Pay attention next time you watch one. Here’s what you’ll notice: Almost all of them have beautiful places, scene-setters, and well-cast actors who fit the part.
Let’s break that down. Here are the three elements that make movies so visually appealing…
1. Beautiful places
Your favorite movies were probably shot in beautiful locations. Picture "La La Land," but in West Texas. Or "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," only instead of aerial views of an Icelandic volcano, it’s the checkout line at Target. Might not have quite the same effect.
Turns out, beautiful places make for beautiful photos. "Wow!" said no one ever.
But here’s the good news I learned from Ratatouille:
And I think the same principle applies here: Not every place is beautiful, but beauty can be found almost anywhere. All it takes is an artist who knows what they’re doing.
“Not everyone can cook, but a great cook can come from anywhere.”
2. Scene-Setters
There's a big difference between a beautiful location and a scene that feels like it's from a movie. If you're unsure about that, just look around. Many places look nice, but they don't have that movie-like feel.
Why? Because they're missing scene-setters – things like coffee cups, umbrellas, bars, picnics, vintage cars, marshmallows, campfires, you name it. Real love stories aren’t static; they’re full of action and involve things.
Think about it: You drive to the date. You eat. You drink. You explore the city. You play. You touch. You eat again.
Life is verbs. Your photos should be too. And scene-setters are how you make that happen. That’s why you’ll find them all over your favorite movies.
3. Well-Cast Actors
Imagine "Forrest Gump" with someone other than Tom Hanks in the lead role— perhaps Al Pacino. Well, they would’ve had to pay people to watch that movie.
It's not because Al Pacino isn't talented—it's just that the right actor in the right setting is what makes a story come alive. Similarly, if you want cinematic photos that evoke true emotion, you need alignment between subject and setting. You need well-cast actors.
That’s why, as a cinematic photographer, I want to get to know you. I want to hear about your story— about what you like, what kind of dates you go on, your favorite snack, if you’re into fishing, or if you DJ on the weekends. All of it. Because the more I get to know you, the better I can create a scene that feels like it’s yours.
